For centuries, resemblance was the main focus in painting, just as it was for the human body that was studied and dissected in fine art academies through beautiful, reassuring images. The invention of photography and its ability to show things as they are opened up new ways for artists to represent the human body.
This exhibition includes forty-one representative artists from avant-garde artistic movements, including Rodin, Bonnard, Schiele, Kirchner, Chagall, Matisse, Picasso, Miró, Moore, Dubuffet, Basquiat, Tàpies and Fischl, amongst others, and aims to help visitors understand the changes in representing the human body in twentieth-century art.
